O’Neill’s message for defender.

Martin O’Neill has backed young star John Egan to bounce back bigger and better than ever after the defender broke his leg earlier this week.

Egan, 20, was stretchered off during loan club Bradford’s game against Plymouth on Tuesday, with subsequent investigations confirming a break.

The likeable Irishman is currently laid up in hospital awaiting an operation and was visited by his manager yesterday.

O’Neill admits Egan is experiencing a tough time but says his natural character will serve him well along the long road to recovery.

“It’s been a really bad year for him,” the Black Cats boss said. “He lost his father in the early months of this year and then went out to try and get some games.

“We thought that was the right idea and he’d been playing really well, too.

“I saw him yesterday, he’s in hospital in Darlington and he’ll have an operation on Saturday, but it is a real blow for the player and someone who looks as though he’s got a really decent future ahead of him.

“John is very resilient, very strong and I’m sure he’ll get over this.”
