JOS: Taking chances is key

O'Shea's rallying cry ahead of Reading clash.

John O’Shea says Sunderland have to show their quality at key moments if they are to notch a vital win over Reading tonight.

The Black Cats host the Royals at the Stadium of Light (KO 7.45pm) looking to climb the table following last weekend’s defeat to Chelsea.

Sunderland suffered a 3-1 reverse against the European champions but pushed the London club all the way in the second half and were roundly applauded off the field at the end.

And O’Shea says Martin O’Neill’s side have to take their opportunities when they come along during a game he describes as “massive”.

“We will stay positive, keep our mental strength and concentration and look to get something from the game,” the defender added.

“We know we’re more than capable. On another day we could have scored three goals against Chelsea.

“Look at the lads who had the free-kicks. Petr Cech made a fantastic save and [Craig] Gardner saw his come off the bar.

“It’ll be a tough game. Reading have shown they can score goals, but hopefully we can take our chances.

“It’s key we show our quality when we get the opportunities in vital areas. We need to get back to basics and keeping clean sheets because we have players who can score goals for us.”
