O’Neill thrilled with winger’s display.
Former Manchester City star Adam Johnson was a thorn in his old club’s side as he fired the only goal of the game to give Sunderland their third consecutive home win over the Blues.
The 25 year-old stunned his former club with a 30 yard effort 10 minutes into the second half leaving City keeper Joe Hart exasperated.
Following the triumph, Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill paid tribute to the winger: “Adam Johnson is beginning to show glimpses of the real football he is capable of.
“I thought he was excellent against Manchester City.
“He scored the goal, there was a furore at the time as to whether or not the City player had been fouled, but Adam continued on and put the ball in the net and he looked stunned when it went in.”
The manager was also delighted with the overall team performance yesterday and was pleased to see players helping out all over the pitch, including Johnson:
“He was great defensively too,” O’Neill continued, “getting back to help out when needed.”
