Something to build on - JOS

O'Shea reviews Arsenal draw.

John O’Shea has praised his team-mates performance in the goalless draw against Arsenal but insists it’s important they keep their feet on the ground.

The Black Cats were forced to dig deep for large periods at the Emirates, but their disciplined display was enough to secure a point.

And although O’Shea believes solid foundations have been laid for the remainder of the season, he says it’s important Martin O’Neill’s side now turn their attention towards next week’s home game against Reading.

O’Shea said: “Coming to the Emirates, you’re going to be under pressure at times and in the second half we didn’t create as much but I think that was half to do with the conditions.

“Fitness wise, the lads will have benefitted greatly by playing in conditions like this, especially against Arsenal.

“Thankfully we got the rewards from a clean sheet but more importantly the midfield three stand out, they were fantastic. They’ve run themselves into the ground. They’ve had a good 90 minutes and that will put them in great nick for next week.

“Everyone can take a lot from the game.

“But we’re not getting too excited, we’ve only drawn a game. It’s the first game of the season, but it’s something to build on and we look forward now to the next one.

“Hopefully we’ll have a packed house who will get behind us and the manager will want to make sure we create a lot more chances.”
