MON hails 'terrific' striker.

Martin O’Neill believes he’s bagged himself a top-drawer striker in “underrated” Steven Fletcher.

O’Neill made the 25-year-old his third summer signing on Friday afternoon, and the frontman is expected to go straight into the squad to face Reading tomorrow.

Fletcher has penned a four-year deal on Wearside after scoring 24 goals in two season with Wolves.

“Obviously I’m delighted it’s all gone through,” O’Neill said after the deal was signed, sealed and delivered.

“I think Steven will be terrific. I think he’s underrated - not by me - and is an exceptionally talented player who will help us enormously.

“He’s capable of scoring goals and has proved that. He’s also capable of linking play, which is very important to us.”

Fletcher began his career at Hibs before joining Burnley, where he impressed in a single season in the top flight.

The Scottish international then moved on to Wolves and O’Neill believes he can continue his upward trajectory at the Stadium of Light.

“I’m hoping that now, at 25 years of age, [Steven] has got plenty of room to improve and really make his game even better,” he explained.

“I think he’s capable of doing all that. He is a very good player and is improving, too.”
