Younsters lose out in Future Champions play-off.
Sunderland U16s 1 K-Stars U16s 3
Sunderland’s under-16 side slipped to a disappointing defeat in their Future Champions Cup play-off game in Johannesburg this afternoon.
The young Black Cats had finished second in Group D following yesterday’s draw with American side USYSA Select to set up today’s play-off game with Zambian side K-Stars.
Things got off to a bad start for the Wearsiders who found themselves 2-0 at half time following some poor defending at Soweto’s Nike Training Centre.
After the break Josh Robson pulled a goal back for Sunderland following a flowing move which was well finished by the midfielder.
Still trailing, the Black Cats pushed hard for an equaliser, penning the Zambians in their own half.
The pressure failed to develop into a goal and with time running out the K-Stars launched a counter attack, scoring from distance to put the game to bed.
Coach Elliot Dickman said: “We found the game hard today and the opposition managed to put a lot of pressure on us physically which we failed to deal with.
“We’re disappointed in our performance and I don’t feel we showed the quality that we have in the previous games at the tournament.”
Sunderland will now take on Qatari side Aspire Academy in a second play-off game tomorrow.
