Development squad head to the Etihad Stadium.

Sunderland’s development squad face an assignment in the north west tonight as they take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium (KO 7pm).

A win for the Black Cats would see them leapfrog City in the Barclays U21 Premier League table, with both teams having claimed 31 points so far.

The Manchester club sit fourth, ahead of fifth-placed Sunderland by virtue of goal difference. Both teams are just four points behind leaders Liverpool.

Sunderland go into the game on the back of a home win after Jordan Laidler scored the deciding goal in a 1-0 victory over Fulham earlier this week.

City’s results have tended to be decisive one way or the other – they have drawn only one of their 16 games so far, winning 10 and losing five. Their 19 goals conceded is the division’s second-best record, behind neighbours Manchester United.

With the Football League loan deadline having expired yesterday, coach Kevin Ball is likely to change things up with several squad members having departed the club on temporary deals.
