U21s 2014-15 fixtures announced.

Sunderland under-21s will start the 2014-15 campaign with a home game against Liverpool on Monday 18 August.

The fixtures for the new season have now been released, with Robbie Stockdale’s side handed a home opener, taking place at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground.

This will be followed by a trip to Hyde FC to take on Manchester City on Sunday 24 August, with the young Black Cats rounding off a tough start to the season at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Monday 15 September.

Their second home fixture will take place at the Stadium of Light against Tottenham Hotspur, with further matches against Manchester United and Chelsea also taking place at the first-team stadium.

Season card holders can gain FREE access to all under-21s matches, except those held at the Academy of Light which will be played behind closed doors.

The Barclays under-21 Premier League, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports and BT Sport, has also undergone a number of changes over the summer, with a revamped competition now including promotion and relegation.

Premier League Director of Youth, Ged Roddy, said: “The enhancements to the Barclays under-21 Premier League will undoubtedly improve the competition and provide high level playing opportunities for young players that better prepare them for Premier League football.

“Players who want to succeed at the highest levels of the game need experience of playing in stadia in front of crowds, in front of live broadcast cameras and in environments that test them in a variety of different ways.

“The clubs have been hugely supportive and recognise the importance of this part of a player’s development in terms of progressing to first team level.

“Everyone wants to see more and better home-grown players at the highest levels of the game.”
