Watmore scores in development squad's draw at Manchester City.

Manchester City U21 1 Sunderland U21 1

Sunderland’s U21s came from behind to secure an impressive 1-1 draw away at Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Jordy Hiwula opened the scoring with 25 minutes played, latching onto Sinan Bytyqi’s through ball before dispatching cooly past Max Stryjek.

But the young Wearsiders responded and with four minutes of the first half remaining they levelled through Duncan Watmore.

Both sides threatened in the second period but the defences came out on top as both teams secured their first points of the Barclays U21 Premier League season.

City created the first opportunity of the match with five minutes on the clock as Jose Angel Pozo weaved down the left before having a shot blocked.

The Black Cats responded with a chance of their own soon after, but after collecting the loose ball Watmore dragged his effort wide of the post.

Pozo continued to test the Sunderland backline and with 17 minutes played he crafted an excellent opening, firing a ball into the box that narrowly evaded both sets of players.

Eight minutes later the home side’s attacking intent was rewarded as Hiwula raced clear and finished clinically past Stryjek.

City continued to enjoy the greater share of possession but four minutes before the break the Black Cats levelled through Watmore, who rounded goalkeeper Angus Gunn and slotted the ball into the empty net.

The final opportunity of the half fell to City and it was again Pozo who threatened, linking well with Jack Byrne before sending an effort just wide of the target.

Martin Smith’s speculative effort almost saw Sunderland’s confident start to the second period result in a goal, as the midfielder attempted to lift the ball over Gunn who recovered to gather the speculative effort.

City also threatened in the second period, with Bytyqi jinxing his way into the box and forcing a good save from Stryjek with Oliver Ntcham firing the final chance over the match over the crossbar.
