Hammers test for U21s

Development squad face final game of league campaign.

Sunderland’s U21 side will round off their regular season today when West Ham visit the Academy of Light (KO 12 noon).

The development squad are still in with a chance of a play-off place in the Barclays U21 Premier League, sitting seventh with the top four sides qualifying.

A win today would move Sunderland into the final play-off spot, though both Manchester United and Manchester City have games in hand.

The Black Cats have won 10 of their 20 league games so far and coach Kevin Ball is hoping to end the regular season on a high note.

“The players have done very well during the season so it would be nice to round off with a good performance,” he said.

“What will be will be – if we’re fortunate enough to win the game it might be enough for the play-offs, or it might not.

“I’ll concentrate first and foremost on the performance as opposed to whether we win.”

He added: “We might have one or two [young] players in the side and one will be making his starting debut, which will be good.”
