Ji scores stunner in 2-2 draw with Tykes.
Sunderland’s development squad were held to a 2-2 draw by Barnsley in a friendly at the Academy of Light on Monday afternoon.
Ji Dong-won and Liam Agnew scored for the second string, while John Egan was a notable inclusion in the Black Cats’ starting XI with the Irish defender making his first appearance in almost a year.
Ji put the hosts ahead after just eight minutes with a fine finish; the South Korean picked the ball up in the left channel and crashed a thunderous left-footed shot into the top corner, leaving Barnsley keeper Christian Dibble with no chance.
Barnsley equalised with a header from a cross into the box before the half-time interval.
Agnew looked to have won it for Sunderland when he was the quickest to react to Ji’s saved effort but Barnsley’s young left-back struck beyond Maksymilian Stryjek in the Black Cats goal from 20 yards to level the scores ten minutes from time.
Sunderland: Stryjek, Cartwright, Harrison, Egan (McNamee,65), Ferguson, Ba (Agnew, 65), Vaughan (Gorrin, 75), Holland, Moberg Karlsson, Lynch (Lawson, 65), Dong-won.
