Five-goal thriller for Academy side at Manchester United.
Manchester United U18 3 Sunderland U18 2
Sunderland lost out to Manchester United in a five-goal thriller at the Red Devils’ academy on Saturday afternoon.
It turned out to be a disappointing afternoon for the young Black Cats after Lynden Gooch scored twice to level for the visitors.
Sunderland were behind in just the 12th minute as the defence failed to close down a long distance effort and the United midfielder managed to smash home.
The young Black Cats came back strongly only to fall further behind in the 28th minute when defender Ross Colquhoun was caught in possession and the Reds broke away to score.
In the second half, the Wearsiders came out fighting and Jordan Blinco was through with a one-on-one but couldn't finish.
But the lead was reduced by a fine goal just on the hour mark.
American striker Gooch cut in from the right after running at a defender to lash a left-footed piledriver high into the net past the keeper.
Two minutes later and the visitors were level when Gooch finished off a good move to crack the ball home.
It was looking good for Sunderland as they piled forward but in the 80th minute came the winner from a set-piece; United worked a corner well as the away defence was caught out and the Reds grabbed a rather fortunate winner.
Academy manager Ged McNamee said afterwards: "It was so disappointing after playing so well but we were punished by three rather soft goals which could all have been prevented."
