Ji goal secures win for development squad

Brown and Egan step up recovery against Hull.

Ji Dong-won scored the only goal of the game as Sunderland’s development squad beat Hull City 1-0 in a behind closed doors friendly at the Academy of Light.

Wes Brown and John Egan both got through 90 minutes as they stepped up their recovery from respective injuries as the Black Cats comfortably secured the win.

Matthew Fletcher started up front for the Tigers against his former club and nearly opened the scoring but his header was cleared off the line by Liam Marrs.

Connor Wickham twice went close to giving Sunderland the lead in the opening 20 minutes, but he shot narrowly over from the edge of the area on both occasions.

The England U21 international then missed from the penalty spot when Marrs was fouled in the area by Max Clark.

Marrs himself went close to opening the scoring minutes later as he latched on to El-Hadji Ba’s pass and volleyed over.

Cabral forced a smart save out of Rory Watson in the Hull goal on the stroke of half time in a dominant first period for the Black Cats.

Sunderland were ahead after just two second-half minutes as Sam Topliss fouled David Vaughan and Ji dispatched the penalty beyond Watson.

Cabral then hit the bar with a volley from eight yards after working some space inside the Hull penalty area.

Vaughan forced another good stop from Watson on the hour the Black Cats searched for a second.

Egan nearly headed home late on but Watson denied the Irish youngster a first goal of the campaign.

The development squad are next in action when they host West Bromwich Albion at Eppleton CW on Monday 4thNovember.
