Stockdale praises youngsters

Professional development coach speaks ahead of tonight’s game.

Robbie Stockdale says the under-21 side’s new intake have played a big role in the second string’s positive start to the season.

The development squad, who have won five out of their first six games, sit top of the Barclays U21 Premier League ahead of tonight’s game at Aston Villa (KO 7pm).

“The lads’ attitude has been top drawer ever since they came back in the summer,” Stockdale said.

“I have to say that the new additions to the group from last year’s under-18’s have really pushed the others on.

“They’ve provided an injection of enthusiasm and energy and really contributed to the start we’ve had.”

Stockdale says the points return so far is extremely pleasing but prefers to focus on performances and the way the side have dealt with the different challenges thrown their way.

“Of course, results are great but they’re probably more important to the kids than the staff, but it means we’re on the right track and doing the right things.

“We’ve won games in all sorts of different ways – we’ve won with excellent attacking football, from being behind and we’ve had games where we’ve had to battle through.

“Overall they’ve been first class and hopefully we can keep that going.”

He added: “We had a couple of good games against Villa last season and they are a good side.”
