Academy manager sizes up FA Youth Cup assignment.

Ged McNamee says Ipswich Town will offer a tough test for Sunderland’s under-18’s as the youngsters kick off their FA Youth Cup challenge next month.

The young Black Cats will head to Portman Road on December 11 to take on the Tractor Boys in a third-round tie.

Sunderland exited last season’s competition at the same stage at the hands of Manchester City and their best recent run came in 2008, when a two-legged semi-final tie against the same opponents ended in a narrow defeat.

“Everyone puts a bit of prestige and emphasis on the FA Youth Cup,” McNamee said.

“Over the years we’ve had some decent runs. Ipswich away will be a difficult game but playing at Portman Road will be a good experience for the lads.

“We’re under no illusions – it’ll be difficult.

“But we’ve won there before going back quite a few years. I think Grant Leadbitter scored the goal in a 1-0 win and if we can come away with the same scoreline, that’ll do me.”
