U21s seal home win

by Ashley Houghton

Young Cats extend unbeaten run.

Sunderland’s under-21 side maintained their 100% start to the Barclays U21 Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Eppleton CW.

Goals from Mikael Mandron, Alex Gorrin and Adam Mitchell secured the points for Kevin Ball’s side after Devarn Green had earlier pulled one back for the hosts.

The young Black Cats started the game positively and went close to opening the scoring after just a minute as Mandron volleyed David Ferguson’s corner wide.

Mitchell then went close to opening the scoring but his 20-yard right foot curler sailed just wide.

Sunderland continued to dominate throughout the first-half and Duncan Watmore was the next to test Simon Eastwood in the Blackburn goal after Mandron had seen his initial shot blocked.

The youngsters were ahead early in the second-half as Gorrin slipped the ball through for Mandron who finished neatly with his left foot.

The lead was doubled moments later as Gorrin was felled at the back post leaving the referee with no choice but to point the spot and the Spaniard made no mistake from the spot – placing neatly into Eastwood’s top left hand corner.

Rovers then found a way back into the game as Devarn Green found space in behind the Sunderland defence and slid past Joel Dixon.

Mitchell put the game to bed 15 minutes from time, though, as he followed up Lawson’s initial strike to tap hope.

The youngsters will now travel to Southampton next week looking to make it four wins in four.
