Build on derby win, says Liddle.
Coach Craig Liddle has challenged his under-18 side to build on their derby win over Newcastle last week.
The young Black Cats travel to Aston Villa on Saturday after registering a 4-2 victory over the Magpies on Wearside in their last outing.
Sunderland had to wait over a month to resume their league campaign after kicking off the new season against Southampton.
Liddle was left delighted by a solid derby performance and the result has given the youngsters a timely boost ahead of this weekend’s trip to the Midlands.
“I think the win came at the right time,” he explained. “We didn’t really deserve to lose the first game and the win last weekend has given us a platform to build on.
“Obviously the result gave everyone a lift and it’s been a happy camp this week.
“Now we’re looking to be well prepared going into a tough game against a Villa side who beat Manchester United last weekend.
“We have to respond in the right way after a win as well as after a defeat. The standards set against Newcastle were very high and it’s important the players continue to build on what they showed last week.”
Liddle added: “I’ve been pleased with training and there’s a good atmosphere. We’re all looking forward to going down to play at a fantastic facility and on a good surface.
“It’s something new for the players to go down there and everyone is excited.”
