U18 Preview: Sunderland v Aston Villa

Youngsters in Barclays U18 Premier League action on Saturday.

Sunderland’s youngsters host Aston Villa at the Academy of Light this weekend in the Barclays U21 Premier League (KO 11am).

Craig Liddle’s side will be looking to return to winning ways following two successive defeats, including a 5-2 loss at Southampton last time out.

The young Black Cats’ football has been exciting – they have failed to score in only one league game this season and have netted 16 times in just seven games.

Young Frenchman Mikael Mandron is leading the way up front having contributed seven of his side’s goals this season.

Now they youngsters are looking to tighten up at the back and make the most of two games in hand on some of their rivals.

They ran out 3-2 winners in the corresponding game between the two sides earlier in the season, with Carl Lawson adding to a Mandron double.

There’s little to choose between the teams in terms of league progress so far, with the outfits level on points (9) with Sunderland having played a game fewer.

Villa have won three and lost five of their eight games and boast the league’s joint-second tightest defence with 15 goals conceded.
