Striker in England side defeated by France.
Sunderland WFC’s Beth Mead suffered Euro final heartbreak as England’s under-19’s were defeated by France in extra time on Saturday.
The Three Lions powered their way to the final in Llanelli, with striker Mead playing an increasingly prominent role throughout the tournament.
Mead, who was the country’s top scorer last season, played the whole game against the French as Mo Marley’s side came within a whisker of lifting the trophy.
After a goalless 90 minutes, Sandie Toletti opened the scoring early in extra time before Aminata Diallo sealed victory for the French.
Coach Marley told thefa.com: “[In the Final], we were a little bit overawed by the occasion in the first half. Second half [it] was a bit more [of] what we’ve delivered throughout the tournament.
“Once the [first] goal went in, it was probably a bit too much against a really strong team.
“But I’m really proud of them. Hopefully lessons learned and we’ll be better equipped for next year.”
Due to their performance in the final, England have secured automatic qualification for next year’s U20 World Cup in Costa Rica.
