Crunch clash for Ladies

Lady Black Cats targeting win over title rivals.

Sunderland Ladies travel to Doncaster Rovers Belles this Saturday for their biggest game of the season so far as the sides battle for top spot in FA WSL2.

Sunderland currently sit in pole position with a two-point advantage over their Yorkshire rivals and know that a win this weekend would give them five-point cushion. Doncaster, however, will be looking for revenge having been beaten 2-0 at the Keepmoat by the Black Cats in the Continental Cup earlier this season.

Team manager Mick Mulhern is taking all suggestions of this being a ‘must-win’ game in his stride.

“We go into the game full of confidence having had two good games against FA WSL1 opposition,” said Mulhern.

“I don't think the pressure is on us to win the game but it would give us breathing space at the top if we do. It'll be great to have as much support there as possible to cheer us on as that will give the girls a big lift in what is sure to be a very tough test.”

Sunderland will go into the game without striker Beth Mead who has been selected to represent England at the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup.

“Obviously a player of Beth's calibre means she will be missed,” admits Mulhern. “However, we have a lot of quality forwards and they have a chance to prove themselves in the coming weeks.”
