Lady Black Cats to visit the north west in Continental Cup.

Sunderland Ladies return to Continental Cup action this weekend as they travel to Manchester City to take on the newest team in WSL 1 on Sunday (KO 2pm).

Manchester City are making their debut in the top league in women's football and have made several big name signings, including former Sunderland stars Steph Houghton and Jill Scott.

Starting in an established league with a brand new team, it looks as if City have found their feet and are stating to have an impact.

Sunderland go into the game with a 100 per cent record in the league and top of the WSL 2 table, and although league success is the priority, there is still everything to play for in the Continental Cup.

Team manager Mick Mulhern is excited at the test City will pose for the Lady Black Cats.

"I'm really looking forward to the game," he said. "Our aspirations are WSL 1 and therefore this is a ideal opportunity to measure ourselves against a team in that league.

"A good result in the cup would certainly help with forward momentum in the upcoming league programme

"From recent reports I know City are very fit and flying at the moment."

Houghton and Scott had many successful years at Sunderland and will now face their home town club and former manager.

"The game has the added spice of lining up against former players and England stars Steph and Jill," admits Mulhern.

"I coached both for a very long time and I'm delighted they're both doing so well, making a success of their football career. Having said that I'm desperate to win and I know being former Sunderland players, they'll feel exactly the same."
