Mead with four in charity match at Durham.
New Ferens Park (Durham City FC) was the venue for the much anticipated 'Clash of the Titans' charity match in aid of The Blood Foundation.
Sunderland Ladies stars past and present gathered together to support a worthy cause and a large crowd were treated to a feast of skill, entertainment and fun.
The ‘Old Girls’ team contained five current England internationals and several former stalwarts whilst the current squad were almost at full strength and introduced a couple of new signings and stars of the future.
The first chance went to the former players as Steph Houghton’s free-kick was smartly turned away by Helen Alderson.
Soon after, the current team took the lead when Beth Mead slotted home before doubling the lead minutes later with a well-placed effort. New signing Rebekah Bass scored a third following good work by Mead before Sarah McFadden added a fourth just before the break.
As the second half got underway Abby Holmes nearly diverted into her own goal but the Lady Black Cats’ defender was saved by the post.
The Old Girls were stepping up their game as Jordan Nobbs and Michaela Carter were denied by Alderson after some fine interplay involving Jill Scott and Houghton.
Further goals from Sunderland Ladies followed as Mead bagged her third and fourth after Kelly McDougall had earlier extended the hosts’ lead.
There was still time for former stalwart and chief organiser Julie Twaddle to jink her way through and nutmeg Vicky Greenwell before firing over.
The former players were awarded a late penalty but still couldn’t score as Alderson saved a twice taken spot-kick from Karen Scorer.
The final action of the game saw an exciting run by former defender Emma Redhead result in a delightful chip which came back off the bar.
