Sunderland WFC

Ladies closing in on title

by Ashley Houghton

National Premier League crown close.

Sunderland WFC travel to Aston Villa this weekend knowing a win could all but secure the FA Women’s Premier League title for a third consecutive season.

Mick Mulhern’s side currently lie second in the table but have three games in hand on top of the table Watford who lead the Lady Black Cats by two points having completed all their fixtures.

If Leeds United fail to win their game at Coventry on Sunday, and Sunderland defeat the Villans, Mulhern’s side will be champions.

Villa are currently fourth in the table, with 23 points from 15 games, though they won the Premier League Cup last weekend after a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory against Leeds.

Sunderland battled to maintain their 100% start when they hosted the Villans in September; the Lady Black Cats took the points following a hard-fought 2-1 victory with Kelly McDougall and Keira Ramshaw sealing the win for Mulhern’s side.

Sunday’s game takes place at Boldmere St Michael FC, with the slightly earlier kick-off time of 1pm.  Up-to-date live goal updates will be available from the official Sunderland Women's Twitter (@SunderlandWFC).
