2006 – Gary Breen, Justin Hoyte, Anthony Le Tallec and Andy Welsh all played their last game for Sunderland as the Black Cats lost 2-1 at Aston Villa.

1995 – Martin Smith scored for the third consecutive game in a 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion at Roker Park. The game was also Tony Norman’s last in a Sunderland shirt.

1988 – Keith Bertschin scored Sunderland’s last goal in Division Three as the Black Cats recorded their fourth consecutive win with a 4-1 victory over Rotherham United.

1923 – Goalkeeper Albert McInroy was signed in a toilet of Manchester’s Grand Hotel two minutes after his contract had expired with Leyland Motors.
