1943 - Future Sunderland manager Mick Buxton was born in Corbridge.

1941 - Sunderland's first league goalkeeper, William Kirkley, passed away aged 78.

1879 - Billy Hogg born in Sunderland - he was one of the players to score a hat-trick in the famous 9-1 win at Newcastle in 1908.
