– Roy Keane’s Sunderland were held to a goalless draw at Pride Park by Derby County. The Black Cats did get the ball in the back of the net - however, the goal was controversially ruled out for offside.

1999 – Sunderland announced plans to increase the capacity of the Stadium of Light from 42,000 to 48,000.

1952 - Former Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill was born in Kilrea, Northern Ireland. 

1984 – Former manager Alan Durban was sacked, with Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson stepping in as caretaker.

1930 – Birth of centre-forward Ted Purdon in Johannesburg.
