2005 – England U21 striker Jon Stead signed for Sunderland from Blackburn Rovers for a reported fee of £1.8million.

1990 – Despite losing the play-off final, the Black Cats were promoted to Division One due to Swindon Town being refused promotion by the Football League.

1975 – England international centre-half Dave Watson left Wearside to join Manchester City for £275,000.

1963 – Former Sunderland player Colin Grainger, who took up a career in singing after his football days were over, appeared on the same bill as The Beatles at the Southern Sporting Club in Manchester.
