2011 - Asamoah Gyan rocked Newcastle in the Wear-Tyne derby as he grabbed a dramatic point with a last-gasp goal. Kevin Nolan fired the Magpies into the lead early in the second half - until Gyan intervened and took the roof of the Stadium of Light.

1985 - Sunderland signed a player - Ian Wallace - from a French club (FC Brest) for the first time.

1973 - Notts County are beaten 2-0 on the way to Sunderland's FA Cup victory. 

1957 - Former player Ian Atkins was born in Sheldon, Birmingham.

1954 - South African forward Ted Purdon scored twice on his debut - a 5-0 win over Cardiff City.

1937 The first FA Cup winning campaign starts with a 3-2 win at Southampton

1900 - Sunderland signed left-back James Watson from Scottish club Clyde.
