Club legend born on this day in 1946.

FA Cup winner Ian Porterfield was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, on this day in 1946.

Porterfield, who passed away in September 2007, would have been celebrating his 68th birthday today.

He will forever be revered for scoring the winning goal in the 1973 final against Leeds United, smashing the ball home from close range as Bob Stokoe's side took the trophy.

Porterfield joined Sunderland from Raith Rovers for a £45,000 fee - a then record sum received by the Scottish club.

He made a total of 266 appearances for the Lads, scoring 19 goals - none of them more important than the Wembley winner.

As well as the FA Cup, Porterfield won a Second Division championship with Sunderland in 1976 before joining Sheffield Wednesday in summer 1977 following a loan spell at Reading.
