SAFC sizzle on opening day clash.

2003 – Sunderland kicked off their season at 5.35pm in a televised fixture at Nottingham Forest. This is probably the hottest conditions in which the club have played a competitive match, with the pitchside temperature at 39c at kick off.

1985 – Former England international Eric Gates signed for Ipswich Town for £150,000.

1983 – Sunderland beat St Mirren 1-0 in the final of the pre-season tournament, the Isle of Man Trophy.

1975 – Striker Mel Holden made his debut in the first Anglo-Scottish Cup tie to be played at Roker Park. The game, in front of 12,673 spectators, ended in a 1-0 win for Carlisle United.
