McCoist on target in six-goal opening day thriller.

1981 – Sunderland opened their 1981-82 league campaign with a thrilling 3-3 draw at Portman Road against Ipswich Town.

Ally McCoist, Iain Munro and Nick Pickering made their Black Cats bows in the match with McCoist making an immediate impact, capping his debut with an assist for Mick Buckley’s second to put Sunderland 3-1 up.

The Tractor Boys went on to finish second in the league, narrowly losing out to Liverpool who clinched the title with 87 points.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats just avoided relegation, finishing two points ahead of Leeds United who were sent down with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Middlesbrough.

2003 – USA captain Claudio Reyna transferred to Manchester City for £2.5m on the same day that Emerson Thome move to Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer.

1928 – Sunderland benefitted from two own goals for the only time in their history; Jones and Whyte of Blackburn Rovers turned the ball into their own net in a 3-1 home win.

1925 - David Halliday scored two goals on his Sunderland debut at Birmingham. He went on to score ten goals in his first four games for the club.
