Sunderland dismantle City.

1980 - Sunderland topped the First Division table following a superb 4-0 win over Manchester City.

Stan Cummins got on the scoresheet as a second-half hat-trick from John Hawley secured a memorable victory at Maine Road.

The Black Cats – who were promoted following the preceding season – enjoyed a stunning return to the top flight having won their inaugural fixture 3-1, securing a comfortable victory over Everton at the Stadium of Light.

The Wearsiders superb start would come to an end in their next fixture as Southampton secured a 2-1 win, but a return to winning ways was soon established via a 1-0 win over Leicester City which followed a 1-1 away draw at Old Trafford.

The season would also end on a high, as the Black Cats secured a 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield to consolidate their top-flight status with a 17th place finish.

2005 – Central defender and ex-Evertonian Alan Stubbs made his Sunderland debut at Anfield. The match ended in a 1-0 defeat as Andy Welsh was harshly sent off for a challenge on Liverpool’s Luis Garcia.

1991 – Sunderland convincingly won their first game back in the Second Division, as goals from Gary Owers, Gordon Armstrong and Colin Pascoe secured a 3-0 win over Barnsley.

1936 – Death of Scottish international William Agnew aged 55. The full back was the first person to play for all three major north east clubs.
