Opening-day win over Spurs, Dichio nets twice and more.

2007 - Michael Chopra netted an injury-time winner against Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the 2007-08 season.

The forward, introduced from the bench as a 71st minute substitute, controlled Ross Wallace’s cross before calmly slotting the ball past Paul Robinson to seal a 1-0 win.

Tottenham rarely troubled the Sunderland backline, with Paul McShane expertly shackling Dimitar Berbatov throughout the match.

However, on their return to the top flight the Black Cats looked dangerous, and Dickson Etuhu might have struck a winner just moments before the late strike sent the 44,000 at the Stadium of Light into ecstasy.

1998 – Two first-half goals from Danny Dichio at Bootham Crescent seal a first round League Cup win over York City.

1979 – Chris Turner became the first Sunderland goalkeeper to appear as a substitute, replacing Barry Siddall at half time on his debut in an Anglo-Scottish Cup tie against Oldham Athletic.

1967 – Former Scotland international Ralph Brand sings from Manchester City for £5,000.
