Player of the Day: Nick Pickering

by Stuart Vose

Popular local lad in the spotlight.

Midfielder Nick Pickering, from South Shields, rose through the ranks of local junior football to join Sunderland on schoolboy forms in 1977.

Turning pro in August 1981, he made his senior debut against Ipswich Town the same month on the opening day of the 1981-82 season.

The England youth international turned out at either left-back or in his preferred role on the left side of midfield.

He spent four and a half seasons as a regular at Roker Park, making a total of 209 appearances and scoring 18 goals including a hat-trick in his penultimate game for the club, against Leeds United.

Pickering joined Coventry City for £125,000 in January 1986 and was a surprise FA Cup winner the following year as the Sky Blues triumphed as underdogs at Wembley.

He later featured for Derby, Darlington and Burnley before moving into media work and youth coaching.
