2004 – Sunderland gained their second successive away win at Elland Road thanks to a second-half strike by Welsh international Carl Robinson.

1962 – Scottish international striker Ally McCoist was born in Bellshill, Glasgow. On the same day Sunderland recorded their highest home victory in the League Cup; a 7-1 thrashing of Oldham Athletic.

1946 – Birth of 1960’s forward John O’Hare in Renton.

1892 – A brace from Johnny Campbell took his goal tally in the opening four games to eight as Sunderland comfortably beat Blackburn Rovers 5-0 at Newcastle Road.
