Agnew and Bracewell feature for the last time in a Sunderland shirt.

1997 – The 2-1 victory at Bury in a League Cup second round match marked the final appearances of Paul Bracewell and Steve Agnew in a Sunderland shirt. The game was also goalkeeper Edwin Zoetebier’s debut.

1978 – Gary Rowell scored twice as Sunderland won 2-1 at Turf Moor in a game in which the Black Cats were sent down to nine men as Mick Henderson and Joe Bolton were sent off.

1961 – A 4-0 home win over Scunthorpe United started a run of only one defeat in seventeen games that took Sunderland from 19th up to third in Division Two.

1919 – Half back Arthur Wright was born in Burradon, Northumberland.
