Clough returns from injury and Clock Stand officially opened.

1964 – A crowd of 52,177 turned up to see Brian Clough’s return to action twenty months after damaging his cruciate ligaments. The Black Cats drew 2-2 with West Brom as George Mulhall and Charlie Hurley scored the hosts’ goals.

1939 – The Football League was suspended following the outbreak of WW2 as Ted Drake scored four goals in a 5-2 win for Arsenal over the Lads - but the result was expunged at the end of the season.

1936 – The rebuilt 15,500-capacity Archibald Leitch-designed Clock Stand was officially opened by Lady Raine before the 3-2 home win against Derby County.

1907 – The first ever Sunderland match-day programme was produced for the match against Manchester City. Previously only a teamsheet had been issued.
