Ghanaian international in the spotlight.

John Mensah made 35 appearances in his two loan spells with the Black Cats between 2009 and 2011.

The Ghanaian international began his career in Italy with Bellinzona and Chievo whilst spending time on loan with Genoa, Modena and Cremonese.

In January 2006, Mensah left Italy to join Rennes in France where he made 59 league appearances before joining Lyon in 2008.

After a year with Lyon, John moved to Wearside on loan and, despite injuries preventing him from ever having a prolonged run in the first team, was a hit with fans for his quality defensive displays.

He scored his first, and only, competitive goal for the club in a 4-3 defeat at Manchester City in December 2009.

Mensah’s first season with the club returned 17 appearances as the Black Cats finished 13th in the Barclays Premier League.

John joined up again ahead of the 2010-11 season and he added 18 appearances to his Sunderland tally as persistent injury problems prevented a regular run in the side.

Mensah spent another year at Lyon but couldn’t break back into the side and he re-joined Rennes in January 2013.

The defender, also known as ‘The Rock’, has been capped on 79 occasions by Ghana winning both bronze and silver medals at the African Cup Nations in 2008 and 2010 respectively.
