1994
– Goals from Martin Smith and Phil Gray gave Sunderland a 3-1 win at West Bromwich Albion. 

1972 – Stanislav Varga was born in Lippany. The defender was the first Slovakian to pull on a red and white shirt. He had two stints with the Black Cats, the first during Peter Reid’s time at the helm from 2000 to 2003 and then Roy Keane resigned him from Celtic in 2006. 

1966 – Nick Sharkey made his final appearance for Sunderland in the home draw with West Bromwich Albion. It was the striker’s 99th appearance for the Lads.
