1999 – Kevin Phillips became the first Sunderland player to appear for England at the Stadium of Light as the Three Lions defeated Belgium 2-1 in a friendly.

1987 – Sunderland’s ‘G-force’ helped the Lads to a 4-1 home victory over Wigan Athletic to put them top of Division Three. Gates and Gabbiadini grabbed two goals apiece as Denis Smith’s side went on to top the table at the end of the campaign.

1925 – Sunderland beat Everton 7-3 at Roker Park in a game that included two strikes each from Bobby Marshall and David Halliday. The rout meant Sunderland had scored 25 goals in their opening five home games.
