Club legend Anderson leaves whilst Howard Gayle send the Cats into the League Cup fourth round.

2002 – Sunderland’s youngest ever captain, Rob Hindmarch, passed away in Canada. Later that day the Black Cats came back from 2-0 down at half-time to win 3-2 against Arsenal at Highbury in a League Cup tie.

1999 – Number 31 Michael Reddy became the first Sunderland player to score with a squad number higher than 30 when he followed up Kevin Phillips’ saved penalty at Middlesbrough to give the Lads a 1-1 draw.

1984 – Howard Gayle scored in extra-time to beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 and send Sunderland through to the fourth round of the League Cup.

1963 – After almost 450 games for Sunderland, Stan Anderson was transferred to Newcastle United for £19,000.
