1972 – ‘The Messiah’ Bob Stokoe was appointed as Sunderland boss with caretaker manager Billy Elliott returning to his coaching duties.

1947 – Newbiggin-born centre forward Ron Turnbull had a dream Sunderland debut as he scored all four goals in a 4-1 home victory over Portsmouth.

1923 – Record penalty scorer Billy Clunas signed from St. Mirren for £2,500.
