A look back on events on this day in Sunderland's calendar.

1998 – Gavin McCann moved to Sunderland for an initial fee of £300,000 plus a further £200,000 based on appearances.

1993 – Terry Butcher was dismissed as Black Cats boss with Mick Buxton taking temporary charge.

1966 – David Herd had the unusual distinction of scoring a hat-trick against three different keepers in Manchester United’s 5-0 home win over Sunderland. Jimmy Montgomery conceded the first goal before going off injured with replacement keepers Charlie Hurley and John Parke also failing to stop Herd’s efforts.

1910 – A 4-0 home victory over Tottenham Hotspur was Sunderland’s 14th, and last, of an unbeaten run that had spanned from the beginning of the campaign.
