1998 - Sunderland's record unbeaten start to a season came to an end with a 3-2 home defeat to Barnsley.

1992 - Michael Gray made his debut as a substitute for Kevin Ball in a 1-0 win at Derby.

1891 - Hugh Wilson became the first Sunderland player to be denied from the penalty spot - his spot-kick against Burnley was saved. He had earlier converted another penalty in the same game.
