1945 – Former Sunderland striker and caretaker manager, Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson, was born in Sunderland.

1922 – Jock Paterson and Arthur ‘Tricky’ Hawes scored second-half goals as Sunderland beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Roker Park.
