2003 – Stewart Downing scored his first Sunderland goal as the Black Cats defeated Gillingham 3-1 with John Oster and Marcus Stewart scoring the other goals.

1954 – England football and cricket international Willie Watson left Sunderland to become player-manager of Halifax Town.

1950 – Centre forward Trevor Ford scored a hat-trick on his home debut against Sheffield Wednesday at Roker Park.

1893 – Jimmy Millar scored a hat-trick as Wolverhampton Wanderers were comprehensively beaten 6-0 at Newcastle Road.
