1943 – Former Sunderland manager Mick Buxton born in Corbridge.

1941 – Sunderland’s first League goalkeeper, William Kirkley, died aged 78.

1879 – Centre forward and coach Billy Hogg born in Hendon – he scored a hat-trick in Sunderland’s 9-1 win over Newcastle in 1908.
