Raich Carter receives the FA Cup

Raich Carter lifts the FA Cup after victory over Preston.

1993 – Sunderland hammered Portsmouth 4-1 at Roker Park thanks to a Don Goodman double and strikes from Martin Gray and Gordon Armstrong whilst Pompey had two players sent off.

1970 – Roker Park staged its first competitive European game as Lazio visited Wearside for an Anglo-Italian Cup tie.

1937 – Bobby Gurney, Raich Carter and Eddie Burbanks scored as Sunderland beat Preston North End in the FA Cup Final. Hendon-born Carter lifted the trophy in the first ever final to be shown on television.

1920 – Sunderland’s final league match of the season, at home to Liverpool, was declared a benefit game to celebrate Bob Kyle’s fifteen years as manager.
