9th April 2004
Sunderland beat Sheffield United for the third time in one season with a 3-0 victory over the Blades at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats won the first encounter between the two sides before narrowly edging out the Yorkshire side at the SoL in the FA Cup quarter-final.
Goals from Tommy Smith, Gary Breen and Kevin Kyle extended Sunderland’s unbeaten home run to 19 gamers.
Smith grabbed his eighth goal of the season when he finished Jason McAteer’s cross after just seven minutes.
The visitors went close to equalising when Robert Page scooped a dangerous free-kick from Alan Wright over the bar.
Carl Robinson went close to doubling the Black Cats’ advantage on his home debut but his shot was well saved by Paddy Kenny.
Sunderland went further ahead when central defender Breen headed home Sean Thornton's corner kick.
Thomas Myhre prevented Michael Tonge from setting up a tight finish when he produced a fine save in the closing stages.
Kyle then made certain of all three points when his left foot shot gave Kenny no chance deep into injury-time.
