Black Cats kick off 2001 with a bang.
Sunderland 4 Ipswich Town 1
1st January 2001
The Black Cats extended their unbeaten run to four with an incisive 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town at the Stadium of Light.
Goals from Julio Arca, Kevin Phillips, Danny Dichio and Stefan Schwarz earned Peter Reid’s side the victory after Marcus Stewart had opened the scoring for Ipswich.
The hosts ran out comfortable winners but it was the away side who struck first when Stewart flicked Alun Armstrong’s cross past Thomas Sorensen in the Black Cats goal.
That goal sparked Sunderland into life and Peter Reid's side equalised on the half-hour when Arca’s left-footed free-kick nestled in the top corner leaving Richard Wright with no chance.
The Black Cats took the lead just after the restart, Dichio flicked on for Phillips who finished neatly, scoring his tenth league goal of the season.
Phillips and Dichio combined for the third too, this time Phillips turned provider, pulling back from the by-line to give Dichio the simplest of finishes to make it 3-1.
Sunderland grabbed a fourth in the closing stages, Stefan Schwarz tapping in from close range – much to the delight of over 46,000 at the SoL.
Sunderland: Sorensen, Makin, Gray, Thome, Craddock (Varga, 70), McCann (Williams, 68), Hutchinson, Rae, Arca (Schwarz, 74), Dichio, Phillips.
